Jonas Hocherman is a composer, arranger, tenor/bass trombone, and tuba player. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Trombone from Unirio in 2014, supervised by professor João Luiz Areias. Currently, he works as a bass trombone player in the Amazônia Jazz Band.

 

Jonas first started his trombone studies in the Villa-Lobos Music School under Trombone Professor Eduardo Guimarães’ guidance in 2002. Since then, he has attended masterclasses and studied with trombone masters such as Brandt Attema, Jurgen Van Rijen, Werner Schrietter, Bart Van Lier, Sergio de Jesus, Don Lucas, Dirk Amreim, among others. He has also studied arrangement, composition and harmony with Itiberê Zwarg, Jayme Vignolli, Bernardo Ramos, Joana Queiroz, Antônio Guerreiro, Pauxy Gentil-Nunes, and Caio Senna.

Within the first seven years of his career, he played at the Itiberê Family Orchestra (Itiberê Orquestra Família), where he has learned Hermeto Pascoal’s Universal Music concepts and performed in numerous venues and festivals across Brazil and all of Latin America. While working in the Orchestra, he participated in two records: the Calendar of Sound (Calendário do Som), within the Pixinguinha Project, composed of tunes by Hermeto Pascoal, and the Contrastes album, which won the FUNARTE award.

 

In addition, Jonas has played with Egberto Gismonti along with the Corações Futuristas orchestra, having performed all over Brazil, in the states of Bahia, Paraíba, Pernambuco, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, and abroad, in Belgium (Europalia Festival, 2009).

 

In over 20 years as a musician, he has played and recorded contributing to several projects led by artists like Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, Bibi Ferreira, Arthur Verocai, Valéria Lobão, Liliana Herrero, Harvey Wainaple, Thiago Amud, Vovô Bebê, Idriss Boudrioua, Gaia Petrelli Bigband, BJBB, Yamandu Costa, Fanfarrada, Luiza Brina, Mano a Mano, Beto Serrador and Orquestra Manouche, Luiza Sales, Bom de Som, Marcos Braccini and more.

 

Jonas won the Funarte Brazilian Music Award public notice as a composer, allowing him to make his first record as an author, the Conversa entre irmãos album, with the Jonas Hocherman Septet ensemble. It was composed of one string quintet (two violins, one viola, one cello, and one acoustic bass) and two trombones. The ensemble has played his pieces and arrangements in several venues across Brazil and Argentina, in cities such as La Plata and Buenos Aires in 2016 and 2017. In 2015, the Septet took part in the Villa-Lobos Chamber Music Festival contest, making it to the finals. In 2019, the group released the Livro de Cabeceira EP, featuring the singer Beth Dau, recorded with Jonas’ arrangements for some of Dory Caymmi’s, Hermeto Pascoal’s, Marcelo Neder’s, and Jonas’ compositions.

 

In 2017, Jonas won the Terra Una Music Award by Ibermusica, where he got to attend an artistic residency for composers in the Terra Una Ecovillage.

 

Jonas is also part of the Inventos Wind Sextet. After approval in an open call by the Rio de Janeiro’s Culture Secretariat, they recorded their first album in 2012 composed of their own compositions along with tunes by Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, and Itiberê Zwarg. This ensemble has made a video clip funded by the Promoting New Artists open call from the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat. They have performed in events and venues such as Quintas no BNDES, Ibeu’s Cultural Centre, Centro de Referência da Música Carioca, Sergio Porto Theatre, and Casa do Núcleo (in São Paulo).

 

In 2018, he was hired by Globo Broadcast Company to join the band in Lazaro Ramos’s show, The Best Years of Our Lives (Os melhores anos de nossas vidas). He got to play with artists like Daniela Mercury, Skank, Maria Rita, Vanessa Da Mata, Benito de Paula, and others.

 

Jonas has directed and composed soundtracks for children’s plays such as Ombela: the origin of rain (Ombela, a origem das chuvas), along with Maria Clara Valle. Play that won nine categories in the CBTIJ Award in 2019, including the two music categories — Best Musical Direction and Best Original Music. He also directed and composed for the children’s play Lupita, along with Karina Neves. The play got nominated to the Cenym Award for Best Soundtrack (2020). In theater, Jonas has played in musical shows such as Emilinha and Marlene, Bibi Ferreira, The Great Mystical Circus, The Life of Doctor Antonio, Tim Maia, and more.
